Soapbox Moment: On Feminism
There are a lot of things that bother me during my every day life.. I am bothered by the simple disability to cross a road without feeling stressed that some asshole is going to run me over while they are sexting on their phone. I am bothered by humans self importance and self centered universes while they try to push me at the coffee line…
For years I have been an armchair activist.. donating money, signing petitions, and discussing when I could about the wrongs of the world. My causes of choice have always been animals and feminism.
I want to talk about the later today:
I believe in feminism in a way that will allow women the right for a rape kit without having to pay for it (Pay for Rape Kit) in the same way that any human being doesn’t haven’t to pay for the police if they call them to their home if they were assaulted by a burglar.
I believe in feminism in a way that will allow me to be paid the same amount of money as any man doing the same job as me (yes still.. women are being paid to do the same job as men, yet being paid less (most recent news I could find here but it stands true around the globe and a simple google search should offer you a lot of similar articles).
I believe in a feminism, where women are not referred to as “ladies” unless you call “the men” “gentlemen” and when referred to, “woman” or “man” doesn’t enter my description the same way “caucasian” “asian” etc wouldn’t unless I am being lined up for a police manhunt (any Ryan Seacrest appearance on tv will always be garnished with “the ladies” instead of “the women” whereas the men, remain “the guys”).
I believe in a feminism where I have the choice of what I want my body to do, appear, dress without being accosted by insane fanatics/abusers/lewdness and without being even said “She was asking for it” (Article on rape on NYT)
I will not discuss my feelings here on religion of any flavour and how the female population has suffered throughout it to the very day. This is for another day.
I do not believe in a feminism that is male bashing, believing that woman can do no wrong, and as such please take the time to listen (or watch) this presentation from Courtney Martin called “Reinventing Feminism” on Ted Talks.
At the seven minute timeline, I cried, because I wish I can be that woman to whomever might look up to me one day.
Be who you want to be today, don’t wait.
